Gustav Klimt

July 14, 1862 - February 6, 1918

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of Vienna Art Nouveau movement.

He was born in Baumgarten, near Vienna, Austria. He was educated at the Vienna Kunstgewerbe Art School in the years 1879-1883. Klimt was also a honorary member of the universities of Munich and Vienna.

His major works include paintings, murals, sketches and other art objects, many of which are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery. One of the founding members of the so-called Wiener Sezession (Vienna Secession) and a periodical "Ver Sacrum". Klimt is known for his use of gold in paintings. This can be seen in the painting to the right, Judith I, painted in 1901.

Gustav Klimt died in Vienna and was interred at the Hietzing Cemetery, Vienna.

An artist and a lover, Klimt found success as a designer before his fine art works started setting the world alight. Denounced as pornographic his golden patterned paintings are understandable as decoration as much as allogorical musings on age-old riffs. The unattainable woman, the ambivalence that everyone feels towards death.
