Keith Haring

Keith Haring

was a pre-eminent artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York street culture of the 1980s.

Born in Pennsylvania, he began as a pop artist. He set out to reach the widest possible audience with his early drawings in the subways and quickly gained recognition in the art world. Despite his early death of AIDS in 1990 at the age of 31, Haring's imagery has become a universally recognized visual language of the 20th century. The Keith Haring Foundation, established in 1989, continues Keith's legacy of giving to children's organizations.

A simple, brilliant line

Keith Haring created some of the most iconic modern day images which have been made into posters all over the world. Dying young helps an artist's image, but he was cool before his death anyway, a hot New York artist with widespread appeal.

His graffiti work started on the NYC walls and subways before it made its way into galleries. Ultimately he exploited his name and fame, opening stores and sponsoring coll-dude clothing. An artist not afraid to make work that was accessible.

His images have even been made into tattoos, which could be the ultimate mainstream acceptance of a fine artist, or might just be awful.
