Hume |
Surface, surface, surface. Hume has an addiction to the facade, a perfect example of nineties materialism writ large. His first works of importance, hospital doors in perfect bleak gloss paint now obviously suggest the way he would later drain shades out of his images and rely on broad expanses of subtly coloured gloss.
Gary Hume has also worked in video, finding the stresses of his success such that he encountered artist's block and sat in a bath pretending he was King Canute. Since then Hume has continued his exploration of painting as further, deeper examination of pre-existing images, of for example, flowers or Kate Moss.
As one of the YBAs that took the art world by storm, Gary Hume has a position of great influence among the pre-successful young artists of today. His manner and dressage of painting has been widely aped and re-recorded reminding the viewer that if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery Gary Hume must be flattered off the planet by now.
