History of this famous image of Che Guevara

This photo was taken by a Cuban photgrapher working for a Cuban newspaper, Alberto Gutierrez, known as Korda.

In 1960 he was taking photographs of guests at a dinner in Havana in the presence of Fidel Castro. Che Guevara was also there and Korda snapped a few photos of him along with pictures of the other guests.

One of Korda's pics was used in the newspaper, another (the famous image) Korda pinned to his studio wall, believing it was the best of the portraits.

Later in the decade Korda agreed for a visitor to take away a copy of the picture. He didn't know it was a man - Feltrinelli - who would turn the image into the world icon it is today. Korda didn't see a cent because Cuba was not a signatory of the international copyright convention!
